A few years ago, Miss Conduct posted this photo to her Deviant Art account. Someone was kind enough to make it the daily deviation so it got a lot of exposure. And, for some reason, it inspired some serious debate along the lines of ART vs. PORN. I was caught up in it and expounded quite passionately on the topic.my post

As the photographer of this image, I thought I'd say a few words.
First, let me add that I am proud of this image. I find it beautiful, and the model, Miss Conduct, is simply stunning. We collaborated in the photograph's creation and I know she'd agree that we created something striking.
I am often stunned by the comments that are posted in response to such photos. Shocked, really, on so many levels.
-Pornography vs. Art-
Pornography is imagery that causes sexual arousal. Can this image be construed as pornography? Did it get you hot? Then it's pornographic. For the so-called "average" male, pictures of bottle blonde, big boobed women in skimpy bikinis may be pornographic. For the adolescent male, the Victoria's Secret catalog may be pornographic. For some foot fetishists, fully-clothed women pressing on big gas pedals does the trick. Basically, what I'm saying is that the word "pornography" is open to interpretation.

I think that question is hysterical. Let's look back in history, shall we? Do any of these names ring a bell? Picasso, Rembrandt, Mapplethorpe, to name but a few. I am, in no way, comparing my work to any of theirs, just reminding people of the fact that erotic images are nothing new. And, I'm quite sure that each of those artists had to face criticism and worse.

I'm not afraid to say, "I've got them"! Yep. Two of them. And they're in front.
Miss C.'s got them too (aren't they yummy????) and here they are in a photo.
Yes, her breasts were an integral part of the composition. Could I have cropped them out? Sure. Would I? No. I like her breasts, they look beautiful in the shot. The outfit she's wearing was designed so that her breasts would be exposed. Seeing them there and knowing that may make the viewer consider what was in store for them... It may have made the viewer consider the situation for a moment longer than normal. I think that's great! We're bombarded with images all day, every day. If one makes you stop and ponder, or even, stop and comment, then I think it was a successful photograph.
-Art for profit-
So, tell me, is something not art if it can possibly sell? If you go to a gallery and there's a little red dot next to a painting, does that immediately devalue that work? Is it now not "art" because the artist has profited from it? Yes, this image will appear on Miss Conduct's membership website. So what? Perhaps you might applaud her for being bold enough to populate her site with more challenging images than other, more commercial sites. Alternately, you might also commend her for providing such imagery for those people out there who enjoy it. You most certainly don't have to become a member. There is more out there for you to explore. Really, how can you justify your critical comments? The girl needs to eat, after all! She's got bills to pay!
-Art-
Dictionary.com defines art as: "The conscious production or arrangement of sounds, colors, forms, movements, or other elements in a manner that affects the sense of beauty, specifically the production of the beautiful in a graphic or plastic medium." Is this art or isn't it? Ultimately, that decision is left up to each individual viewer. To me, it is. I think it's beautiful and I have it framed (really, I do!). I appreciate erotic art, and fetish art. You may not, and that is your prerogative.
Finally, I've said this before and I'll say it again, "Not everyone needs to like it". That's the beauty of "art" or music, or movies, or books, etc. Each of us is an individual. We are all entitled to our own tastes and whims. You may like Britney Spears; I sure don't. You may like kung-fu movies; not I. You may like romance novels; I prefer other genres. And, you know what? That's perfect! It's just the way it should be. I don't mind if you look at my photos and don't "get it". That is your absolute right. You know what? Don't look at it! You've got so many other choices! Isn't that terrific??? On deviant art, alone, there are 14,357,885 of options (right at this moment). People, you can exercise your right to choose what you view. If you don't enjoy being challenged by different genres, then don't! Go find something else, please!! Go create your own art and share it with the world. Just don't try to repress my right (or Miss Conduct's right) to do the same thing, or the rights of those who do appreciate it.
I'm glad it was chosen as it's an image I really love. It was actaully a nice challenge to put my thoughts into words. And I hadn't thought about it in quite a while until I saw Michael Helms' journal on the topic the other day.

Xanthia was kind enough to indulge me. See... I know some things about some people. Like I know that Darenzia is fucking funny. And I know that she LOATHES this one porno pose. It involves two hands crossed at the wrists, spreading apart the labia. And, she's kinda right. I've shot that pose myself, but only if the model has done it on her own. It would never occur to me to suggest it because it's so oddly unnatural.
But now I have suggested it. In shooting Xanthia in the blue rubber catsuit with the vaginal sheath, I asked her to do the pose. "For D". We got a kick out of it and were laughing for quite a while after. Here's the shot, D. Hope you enjoy it. LOL

Before my trip to Chicago, I had a terrific day of shooting with Emily Marilyn and Ruby Luster. Of course, Emily and I go waaaay back. We've shot together countless times over the years and I've loved every minute of it. I've always had this soft spot for her... She's one of those few people in this industry that I really count among my friends.
This was my first shoot with Ruby, though. I met her in London last year when I was there for Rubber Ball. I was deathly ill with a killer sinus infection on the day we met, and I probably wasn't the nicest person in the world. I'd been trudging through rain, my Vans were squeaking, they were so full of water, and I was not a happy camper. It took a few days to make it up to her and convince her that I wasn't a total cunt and that I really didn't hate her. I think she got the message, though, thankfully.
And now, we've finally worked together! I'm happy as can be. She's a fun person and I think we work well together. I'm looking forward to more quality time with Ruby in the future.

One location, three models, two days and some wonderful photos to show for it. That's last week's shooting in a nutshell. Lorraine (Tall Goddess) has been busy for the past couple years directing and producing some wonderful adult films for Venus Girls and Ninn Worx, and hasn't had time to do any shooting. You can imagine how honored I was to receive a phone call from her a couple weeks ago asking if I'd be willing to photograph her. Isn't that adorable? Like people aren't beating down her door to get the chance. She was concerned that having not modeled in so long, she'd be out of practice. Well, as I told her, I think these were some of the best photos we'd ever produced together, and I think she gets more beautiful every day. (End gush...)

Sinnamon arrived bearing a glass of Champagne for Sutan before I'd finished with Lorraine. She had called me that day to say that her agent needed new photos of her and would I be into shooting. She had no idea she'd be hoofing it over that same night. LOL We ended up shooting until 3am, long after Sutan and Lorraine had the good sense to take off. The first photo was shot as a special request for a sneaker fetish website and features some funky vintage Keds.

The next morning, bright, early and totally bleary-eyed, I met Xanthia in my driveway and we went back to the location together. We have shot twice before for GG, but not for ourselves, and we kept talking about it every time we'd see each other. When I found out I'd be shooting, I called and told her we could fit her in the following morning and look! She came! I had a bunch of latex I wanted to photograph her in, catsuits by Simon O, my favorite rubber toe socks from Blackstyle, and a spanking skirt made by my friend, Kink. Xanthia's terrific personality and infectious laugh gave me the energy to devote 100% to our shoot. And I thank her for it!

If the last two weekends are any indication, it would seem that BBQ season is upon us. It's been very warm here in LA and that makes everyone want to char meat in their backyards. Me included.Last weekend, Perry Gallagher called to say he was putting together a last-minute BBQ at his house. He wanted to get some of his photographer friends together and I thought that sounded like a great idea. I always love these informal parties that Perry throws. The chow is usually top notch, and he gets terrific guests too. He grilled up some very tasty tri-tip then informed his son that "these are some of the best photographers in the world". We all waved him off with good humor, but it was a pretty fine crowd; Steve Diet Goedde, Michael Helms, Ed Fox, Eric Kroll, and Victor.
Then, yesterday, I went to another BBQ, this one at Eric Kroll's place. It was the first time I'd been there and let's just say it's a feast for the eyes. Tons of books and photos and stuff to look at everywhere. I found myself wandering around checking everything out. We got there an hour after the official start and were among about a dozen people including Dave Naz and Coop. I made the mistake of asking if I could help and spent the rest of the afternoon manning the barbecues. I still smell like charcoal. LOL. Still, it was nice to see some of the same people who were at Perry's, and to meet other artists and friends of Eric's.
Eric had a piece of performance art going on in his bedroom that involved two naked girls, a film from the 60s, and something to do with Dennis Hopper. I'm afraid I don't know all the details, but it certainly set his party apart from all the others. Heh. Once all the food was cooked, I was too wiped out to continue, so despite my desire to catch up with Beatrice, whom I hadn't seen in a couple of years, I begged off, went home and collapsed.
